Terry Gilliam has made many good or interesting films, but Tideland fails on both counts. This film is an appalling, almost unwatchable montage of Norse myth, denial of death, and sexual transgression, fittingly ended by a train wreck.
The DVD, which was loaned to us by a Gilliam fan, opens with then-64-year-old Gilliam telling his viewers that most of us would end up haters. How right he was, though I continued to watch until the bitter end, looking for what Gilliam promised–an exploration of his own inner child.
Jeliza-Rose, the 10-year-old heroine is a doughty schizo-sadist. That is probably more information that we need to know about Mr. Gilliam’s inner workings.
